PNGFP Hydro

The most experienced Hydro Power Operator in Papua New Guinea

PNGFP Hydro is a major Independent Power Producer (IPP), running four hydro power stations with a combined installed capacity of 26.5MW. Our Lower Baiune power station was built in 1932 and still operates at nameplate capacity. The Upper Baiune power station was recommissioned in 1947 but was destroyed by fire and totally rebuilt by PNGFP in 1985. PNGFP operates as the power supply authority in Bulolo, supplying power to local businesses and domestic consumers.

The First IPP to Supply Hydro Power to PNG Power

In January 2013, PNGFP commissioned the Katu Vavini 9.4MW power station at Upper Baiune.  Designed to supply power to the Ramu Grid, it the first hydro power station built by an IPP for the sole purpose of supplying power to PNG Power Limited.   Our 11.6MW Sneath Power Station was commissioned and feeds approximately 11.6MW directly into PPL’s Ramu Grid via their Bauine Substation, raising PNGFP’s capacity to supply PPL with a total of 21MW.
